Choosing a barcode format
Retail products use GTIN barcodes: EAN-13 worldwide, UPC-A in North America, and EAN-8 or UPC-E on small packs. Their last digit is a check digit. Enter the digits without it and it is calculated for you; enter all of them and the tool confirms it, or tells you what it should be.
Code 128 encodes letters, digits and symbols compactly and is the usual choice for shipping labels, SKUs and asset tags. Code 39 is older and only takes uppercase letters, digits and a few symbols. ITF-14 marks outer cartons, and MSI and Pharmacode serve shelf labelling and pharmaceutical packaging.
Barcodes need a clear margin on each side — the quiet zone — and enough contrast between bars and background. The tool never lets the quiet zone drop below what the format requires, and keeps bar widths to whole pixels in raster downloads so edges stay crisp.
